Build A Kit.

Event Background

Heart to Heart International (HHI) is collaborating with the Multifaith Alliance for Syrian Refugees, the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, Becton Dickinson, FedEx and Henry Schein to support the urgent need for humanitarian supplies to aid Syrian war victims.

Syria’s civil war is the worst humanitarian crisis of our time. Half the country’s pre-war population - more than 11 million people - have been killed or forced to flee their homes. Families are struggling to survive inside Syria, or make a new home in neighboring countries. HHI has already sent thousands of humanitarian kits to the region, but the need is still great.

The groups are organizing an event to be held in New York City on June 26, 2016. The event will bring together individuals and families of diverse, faiths to assemble hygiene kits. We expect over 600 volunteers of all ages to volunteer for the afternoon. They will work together, side by side, assembling over 7,500 kits. The kits will then be shipped to Turkey and distributed to Syrian refugees by a local NGO; Orient For Human Relief.

This fun and exciting event will be held at the 69th Regiment Armory located on Lexington Avenue between 25th and 26th Street. In addition to assembling kits, participants will have the chance to see the historic Armory, which contains artifacts dating back to the Civil War. New York basketball fans will be interested to know that the New York Knicks once called the Armory home, and we will be assembling the hygiene kits on their former basketball court. It would be best to arrive at the event via Public Transportation. There will be event signs to direct you to the main entrance off of Lexington Ave. Comfortable and sturdy footwear is recommended. Depending on your assignment, you most likely will be on your feet for extended period of times.

Event Management Volunteers

We are in need of volunteers to fill the following roles:

Registration Table

You will be assigned a registration table to check in participants building Personal Hygiene Kits or Women’s Hygiene Kits. This is a great choice if you prefer a less physically active assignment, a very important role that would allow you to sit during your shift. You will provide instruction on checking-in and directions on where participants will be stationed, ensuring that volunteers (with young children) are aware that the Women's Hygiene Kits contain items that are specific to meet the personal hygiene and birth control needs of women.

Greeters

You will be welcoming participants and staff volunteers at the entrants and directing them to the appropriate registration table corresponding with the kit type they signed up to build. You will provide directions to main areas such as assembly lines, bathrooms, first aid stations, refreshments and exits.

Refreshment Table

You will be stationed at the refreshment table, providing water and snacks to participants.

On-Site Logistics

You will provide support where needed, specifically gathering recycling and trash throughout the event.

Assembly Line Team Captains

You will be assigned as a Team Captain for an assembly line and given the following duties: stocking and refilling product on the assembly line, breaking down cardboard boxes and reminding your team of quality control checks. There are two types of kits being built: Personal Hygiene Kits and Women's Hygiene Kits. Please note that the Women's Hygiene Kits contain items that are specific to meet the personal hygiene and birth control needs of women.

We would like these volunteers to stay for the duration of the event (11:00am-5:00pm), which will allow for the event to run smoothly. If for some reason you cannot attend the entire event, please make a note on the signup sheet when you are available. The week before the event, you will receive more specific instructions via email.
