Position
RefugeeOne seeks a responsible intern to assist with the Youth In-Home Tutoring program. RefugeeOne’s in-home tutors work one-on-one with a child who has recently arrived in the United States. In a mutually beneficial exchange of culture and knowledge, tutors will help youth ages 6-17 practice English and adjust to the U.S. school system. Clients are largely located in Rogers Park, West Rogers Park, and Albany Park.
Responsibilities
- Communicate with approximately 100 volunteer tutors annually to set up matches with students
- Prepare educational materials for tutor use during tutoring sessions according to students’ academic and English levels
- Conduct home visits to introduce tutors to their student tutee and family
- Assist at the afterschool program as schedule permits
Requirements
- Reliable and flexible
- Able to work independently
- Comfortable entering client homes and communicating
- Access to a car helpful but not required
Time commitment
- Intern is asked to commit for one school year (September 2016-June 2017)
- 2 days each week. Weekday hours are 4-7 p.m. Can do one weekday and one weekend day if preferred. Schedule is flexible with your availability.
