ORGANIZATION: Chestnut Hill Historical Society

The Chestnut Hill Historical Society - a historic preservation advocacy nonprofit, research institution, and the nation's first accredited urban land trust - is seeking a summer intern for its Conservation and Easement Program. The Society currently holds preservation and conservation easements on 40 properties in and around Chestnut Hill and Northwest Philadelphia. The candidate will work with and report to the Easement Manager, who is a professional in this field.

This is an unpaid internship, but a significant resume-building opportunity for anyone interested in historic preservation, land conservation, and/or library sciences.

Qualifications Required:

  • Self directed
  • Background in library sciences and archival work preferred
  • Experience in electronic and paper file systems development and management
  • Project management experience
  • Capacity to collaborate with the Easement Manager to develop an efficient and user friendly system for easement record management
  • Interest in historic architecture and land conservation is a bonus , but not required
  • Field survey work

Specific Tasks:

EASEMENT MONITORING

  • Assist the Conservation and Easements Manager with field survey of properties including photography and data
  • gathering
  • Assist with compiling the information into reports to be sent to property owners.

WORKING EASEMENT FILES

  • Create Working Files for: Existing Easements/Potential Easements/Easements in Progress
  • Utilize alpha sort system
  • Transfer all information currently stored in numbered binders into files
  • Review existing inventory and determine and record what is missing
  • Determine if what is missing can be located or recreated

ARCHIVE OF ORIGINAL EASEMENT DOCUMENTS

  • Reorder all files for consistency
  • Review existing inventory and determine and record what is missing
  • Determine if what is missing can be located or recreated

ELECTRONIC FILES

  • Scan and download all documents in standing files into electronic files
  • Create folder for each easement with copy of final recorded copy of each easement
  • Review existing inventory and determine and record what is missing
  • Determine if what is missing can be located or recreated

PROMOTIONAL MATERIALS

  • Updated brochure to include information on preservation
  • Create cover letter
  • Updated anticipated costs and responsibilities list
  • Include sample easement document
  • Updated version of "Managing Development & Promoting Preservation
  • Folder with CHHS Logo

The start and the duration of the job opportunity will depend on the schedule of the candidate. It is anticipated that a successful candidate will be able to commit to at least two months and twenty five hours a week.

Mission Statement

The Chestnut Hill Historical Society is dedicated to preserving the historical, architectural, and cultural resources and the open spaces that define the character of Chestnut Hill and its environs.

Description

The Chestnut Hill Historical Society (CHHS) was founded in 1967 to recognize and protect the area’s significant historic buildings, open space, cultural landscapes, natural features and community archives.

The purpose of CHHS is:

  • To preserve land in Chestnut Hill and its adjoining neighborhoods for historic, recreational, scenic, agricultural or open space opportunities.
  • To preserve architecturally significant buildings in Chestnut Hill and its adjoining neighborhoods.
  • To preserve the natural and designed landscape features that characterize the Chestnut Hill Historic District as listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
  • To maintain an archive of historic documents and photos depicting Chestnut Hill and its adjoining neighborhoods.
  • To provide educational programs and information relating to conservation, preservation and history.
ACCOMPLISHMENTS:
  • CHHS listed almost 3,000 buildings on the National Register of Historic Places, one of the largest historic districts in the nation. Many buildings have also been protected through Philadelphia Register listing.
  • An accredited PA Land Trust, CHHS holds dozens of conservation and preservation easements, permanently protecting 88 acres of open space and 13 historic buildings. If you wish to join many of your neighbors in both conserving your land and earning a significant tax break, talk to us.
  • Our collection of over 21,000 architectural drawings, maps, building records, diaries, books, and historic photographs are available for public research in our Archives, with much now available online. Contact a Staff Archivist to make an appointment; Archives are open Monday through Saturday.
  • The CHHS Resource Center provides information to anyone who contacts us or visits our website - with info on contractors, suppliers, and best practices in maintaining your historic property.
