We offer two volunteer opportunities; Rainbow Volunteers and Best Buddies. Our volunteers work on the Duke Pediatric Blood and Marrow Transplant unit to support our families by providing respite, playing and socializing with patients, and serving as general unit resources.
Rainbow Volunteers are asked to commit to a weekly two hour shift for the duration of one year and they volunteer with all the patients. We offer four shifts per day running from 12pm to 8pm, seven days per week and we ask our volunteers to commit to the same weekly shift,
Best Buddies volunteer twice a week and are matched with an individual child. The weekly shifts vary depending up on the family’s needs and the volunteer’s availability.
All of our volunteers participate in a mandatory training prior to volunteering on the unit, and they are required to pass a background check and Duke health screening in addition to receiving any necessary vaccinations including the flu shot.
All volunteers must be 18 years of age or older and/or a second semester freshman. Our volunteers are all about play, distraction and engaging the patients in fun activities. Volunteers also have the opportunity to help at outpatient events.
Our next training is Saturday, September 24th from 9:00am - 5:00pm and registration is required. Prior to the training each participant must complete the following:
- Application
- 30-minute interview
- Health screening provided by Duke
- Background check provided by Duke
- Provide two referrals
