Masa invites you to join our summer math program! By tutoring for 1.5 hours a week you can be a part of the change. Join us in transforming communities through education -one family, one child at a time!
We are seeking dedicated volunteers to be a part of our summer literacy pogram, 1.5 - 3 hours a week. Volunteers will work with students going into grades 4-6 to help improve their math and science skills, and prevent a summer slide!
About Masa:
Masa promotes educational attainment, committed leadership, and civic engagement among underserved families in New York City, with a particular focus on families of Mexican descent.
About the Math Intensive:
Starting in July, Masa will begin their six-week summer program to help support students going into grades 4-6 with their math and science skills. Students in this program are already struggling in math and science, so it's crucial that they receive additional instruction to help boost their confidence and prevent the "summer slide"!
Volunteer Duties:
STEM program volunteers will:
- Work with small groups of students going into grades 4-6 to provide intensive math or science instruction, specifically:
- Keep students engaged in the daily math or science essons
- Perform daily group activities to reinforce the lesson of the day
- Create an environment in which children develop trusting and accepting relationships with adults and peers that foster growth and development
- Collaborate in devising strategies for reinforcing material or skills based on an understanding of individual students, their needs, interests, and abilities
- Maintain and model high academic and personal expectations for all students
Volunteer Requirements:
Volunteers should:
- Be available at least one afternoon a week Mondays or Tuesdays from 4 PM - 5:30 PM beginning July 11th 2016 through August 17th 2016
- Communicate observations regarding students' academic, social and behavioral status
- Be flexible, creative, organized and able to respond to change as needed

Description
Masa provides after-school and mentorship services to students of Mexican descent living in or near the South Bronx. The organization relies heavily on the work of volunteers to serve the varied needs of students involved in the program.
