Cesar Chavez National Monument

This July, We Are the Next will host and facilitate a Youth Heritage Summit in partnership with the National Parks Service and the Cesar Chavez Foundation. This four day workshop will bring 25 high school students from across Southern and Central California to the Cesar Chavez National Monument in Keene, CA to explore the history of Cesar Chavez and the Farmworker Movement. Students will choose from three interest driven tracks including graphic design, social media, and geo-mapping. For each track, students will be guided and accompanied by educators and professionals from diverse backgrounds.

If you are interested in graphic design, social media, or geo-mapping and have a background in education and/or history, we would love for you to join us! Educators and professionals please go to www.youthheritagesummit.org to learn more and apply for consideration. Students under 18 may also apply to attend the summit as a participant at the same link.

Mission Statement

The mission of our organization is to create a sense of place and promote civic engagement by embedding historic cultural resources in our everyday lives. We turn abandoned buildings into assets and inspire the next generation to love them.

Description

Our organization is comprised of three main components:

EDUCATION

The future of our youth is behind everything we do. We use historic places as a way of connecting students to their surrounding built environment. In visiting educational centers and organizing summer camps and weekend retreats, we work to build a sense of place and respect for cultural heritage among our youngest residents.

CITY ASSISTANCE

Municipalities can contract the Next to create sustainable, culturally-focused, civic sites in their communities. Our services include construction management for projects involving historic resources, assisting cities in gaining recognition as National Park Service Certified Local Governments, and community development planning. Our services cost less than the nationwide average, and are performed by qualified professionals.

COLLABORATION

We facilitate collaboration between organizations whose visions overlap. Events we host allow the public and staff / volunteers of these organizations to gain knowledge of the others’ community goals, fostering partnerships and further involvement.
