ORGANIZATION: NE FIRST

  • A group opportunity. Invite your friends.
  • 6 people are interested

As part of New Britain's Summer Enrichment Experience (SEE), NE FIRST is running a LEGO-based program for students in grades K-3. The curriculum for the program will be based on FIRST LEGO League Jr. and the associated Team Meeting Guide. Each classroom will consist of 2-3 counselors. Each group within the classroom will be no larger than 18 students per session, with students being further divided into groups of up to 6. Each session will run for approximately 90 minutes with two sessions per day.

Counselors will be given a curriculum and materials to help students work towards the goal of learning more about the challenge; creating a "show me" poster about their educational journey; learning about their place in the community; and increasing their communication, critical thinking and literacy skills.

Counselors must be 18+. Experience with FIRST LEGO League Jr. or FIRST is welcome but not required.

  • The school district is requiring all staff providing direct service in programs to pass police and DCF background checks prior to the July 25 start date. Documents associated with this check will be provided.
  • We will hold at least one meeting for all counselors prior to the start of the program on July 25 to go through the curriculum and answer any questions.
  • There is a small stipend available to cover lunch costs and transportation for volunteers

Mission Statement

Our mission is to inspire young people to be science and technology leaders, by engaging them in exciting mentor-based programs that build science, engineering and technology skills, that inspire innovation, and that foster well-rounded life capabilities including self-confidence, communication, and leadership.

Description

FIRST stands for "For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology," and was founded in 1989 to inspire young people's interest and participation in science and technology. Based in Manchester, NH, the 501 (c) (3) not-for-profit public charity designs accessible, innovative programs that motivate young people to pursue education and career opportunities in science, technology, engineering, and math, while building self-confidence, knowledge, and life skills.

NE FIRST was the third region of the United States to move to the new District Model, a strategic decision to handle a critical mass of FIRST Robotics Competiton (FRC) teams. Over the past three years, volunteer organizers have been working with FIRST on the formation of the District Model, and last year New England began operation of the district model for the FIRST Robotics Competition. A new 501(c)(3) not for profit public charity, ingenuityNE™, was formed in New England as the fiduciary agent implementing the model.

The six New England states (Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Vermont, Maine and New Hampshire) are organized within the District Model as the FRC New England District.
