Teen Court in Session
Teen Court in Session

Teen Court is a diversion program for youth ages 11-17 who have admitted guilt to misdemeanor crimes. The program allows for defendants to be heard by a jury of their peers who then determine a constructive sentence for them (this usually consists of community service and coming back to serve as a juror among other sanctions).

Teen Court has several volunteer opportunities for middle and high school students (ages 13-18) who are interested in the legal system or simply having an impact on their community. Volunteers serve in key roles as bailiff, clerk, attorney, or juror.

About Volunteers for Youth

Location:

250 Lloyd Street, Suite 103, Carrboro, NC 27510, US

Mission Statement

Volunteers for Youth provides services to Orange County youth to integrate them into the community in ways that help them make responsible choices and recognize that they have a stake in their future.

Description

Volunteers for Youth works with high risk youth through three primary programs. The Mentoring Program provides positive adult role models to young people between the ages of nine and fourteen through one-on-one and group mentoring. One-on-one mentors agree to spend at least two hours a week together for one year. The Juvenile Community Service Program works with young people who have been court-ordered to complete an assigned number of community service hours. Youth are placed in nonprofit settings throughout Orange County and supervised by volunteer worksite supervisors. Teen Court is an alternative court program for middle and high school students. First time offenders are tried and sentenced by a jury of their peers. Teen volunteers take the roles of prosecutor, defense attorney, clerk, baliff, and juror to conduct these proceedings.
