Keeping families close

The Ronald McDonald House of Scranton provides Family Rooms in three area hospitals that serve as bright, homey spaces that provide the families of sick and injured children an escape from the hospital setting yet keeping them near their children. Families will find an assortment of entertainment and food and drinks provided to them free of charge. From these family rooms, volunteers run a hospitality cart that allows them to directly visit the patients in their hospital room and interact with and bring kindness and cheerfulness to children and their families when they need it most - during medical crisis.

We are seeking volunteers for our Family Room located within Moses Taylor Hospital to help bring the security, comfort and fun of the Ronald McDonald House to kids, babies, and families staying in this hospitals.

Non-students and students alike enjoy the benefit of witnessing the impact they have on the hospital stays of sick children and their families. This can be a great opportunity for students, particularly those considering a career in medicine or hospitals to interact directly with child patients and their families, while learning various aspects of the medical system inside and out. We have morning and evening shifts, week days as well as weekends.

The Ronald McDonald Family Rooms (RMFR) are staffed by volunteers daily from 9am-9pm. Family Room volunteers lend a caring hand and provide information as needed, as well as making sure the room is clean and properly stocked. Volunteers must be at least 18 years old and are asked to fulfill a 3-hour shift once a week for a period of at least 3 months. Daily shifts are from 9am-12pm, 12-3pm, 3-6pm and 6-9pm.

  • Registering guests
  • Provide orientation to first time guests and go over Guidelines & Expectations

  • Enforce rules and guidelines when necessary

Description

Faced with a child’s illness life stops overnight and parents enter a world of fear and worry. For parents who don’t live close to the medical care their child needs, there’s an added stress - Distance. Most families have to travel hours for treatment.Living expenses quickly add up.Long drives, lost jobs, worried siblings, sleeping in cars.Being far from family and friends. These are extra burdens no family should have to experience.Help even more families stay close through the biggest challenge of their lives. Together, we can do big things.

While RMHS cannot make medicine taste better or take away painful treatments, we can help lessen the burden and ensure thousands of families a year have the stability and resources they need to keep their child healthy and happy. We believe that an oasis of comfort in a sea of chaos is as powerful as any medication. We believe that a home is more than four walls and a roof over your head. It is the intangible magic that transpires in moments shared together. We believe in building a global community that finds strength, hope and courage in embracing healing as a joyous experience.
