ORGANIZATION: United Planet

From coffee to tango, Argentina conjures images as diverse as the people who inhabit this vast region. Argentina is a complex country, made up of 24 provinces in South America. Buenos Aires, its cultural capital, is largely characterized by both the prevalence of people with European descent and conscious imitation of European styles in architecture. The gauchos and their traditional country lifestyle of self-reliance also influence in the country greatly, as do the traditions of the indigenous peoples (like yerba mate infusions), which have been absorbed into the general culture. As a volunteer here, expect no end to opportunities for outdoor adventure (think Andes Mountains), nightlife, and cultural history.

United Planet is the US and Canadian partner of the International Cultural Youth Exchange, or ICYE. As a volunteer in Argentina, you will be hosted by Subir al Sur, ICYE’s Argentinean partner organization. Their program promotes education for peace and intercultural understanding.

Volunteer projects focus on education and youth. Volunteers will work with urban youth at cultural centers focused on bringing art and culture into the lives of young people, as motivating students to focus on school. These organizations provide a space for young people to meet, engage in recreation, and form intercultural relationships.
