Help On The Farm!

ORGANIZATION: Lighthouse Christian Home & Services

  • A group opportunity. Invite your friends.

During the summer months, particularly, The Lighthouse often needs volunteers to help our residential family with chores on the farm! We have a 40-acre working farm which includes caring for our small mini hereford cows, feeding; cleaning shelters, sometimes helping to relocate them to another pasture. We also have chickens, ducks and pigs; which require daily feeding (gathering eggs), cleaining pens, watering and general maintenace (minor) to their pens.

In addition, we plant a very large garden which becomes part of the household diet and which needs constant care, and harvesting.

We are also in need of volunteers who might be speech therapists, retired teachers and other such specialists who might be able to come to the farm and donate a few hours a week to work with some of our residential family who need help with speech, reading and other habilitation issues.

During Special Olympics, we often seek "coaches" who can help the team practice with basketball, softball and other sports as well as during ski season for skiiers to accompany them while skiing and snowboarding or snowshoeing. There is never a shortage of volunteer need and we LOVE our volunteers!

Mission Statement

For God's love to be expressed for and by individuals with developmental disabilities through faith based programs and services, and giving back to the community that supports them through their own volunteerism.

Description

The Lighthouse was formed in the late 1980's as a ministry and home for adults with intellectual abilities. We are a 40-acre functioning farm with an 8,000 square foot home and 16 full-time residential inhabitants. Our residential family are involved in all aspects of caring for their home and farm, including household chores, live stock chores, gardening and many other programs such as year-round Special Olymics events, volunteering heavily in our community for other non-profits and churches, and helping to host events on our property a few times a year. We invite volunteers in to help with many items including farm and household needs, and compansionship and worship & song on Wednesday afternoons. The Lighthouse residents are very active in their community and on their farm and we invite the community to come out and volunteer and share their skills and care with our residents.
