Catching Fish at Joe W. Brown Park

Every Saturday, NORDC Outdoors offers free walk-up canoeing and fishing behind the Rec Center at Joe W. Brown Park in New Orleans East. For most participants, it is their first time ever partaking in either activity, and for many, it is a theraputic step towards overcoming a fear of water.

Because NORDC Outdoors only has 2 staff members, this offering relies heavily on volunteer efforts. On our busiest day, we served 107 people. Typical days run closer to 35, though the numbers have been steadily climbing.

We are seeking volunteers who are willing to help out on Saturdays from 10am-2pm: even just one Saturday makes a difference. We are particularly interested in volunteers with fishing experience, or who are at least willing to learn and teach children how to bait, cast, and reel in a fishing rod, as well as unhook caught fish to release back into the water.

Other possible tasks for people not interested in fishing could include helping with our sign-in and waiver process, helping canoeing participants put on and take off lifejackets, washing off equipment at the end of the day, and many others. Get in touch if you'd like to spend some time volunteering outside!
