GRID Alternatives

Do you have an interest in helping your local community and the environment while learning new skills?

Ever thought of a career in the solar industry?

Come join GRID Alternatives, a solar construction non-profit, and volunteer with us!

We install solar systems for low-income homeowners at little or no cost, with the help of our volunteers. We operate similarly to the Habitat for Humanity model (and we do installs on Habitat Homes as well). The hands on skills volunteers learn from our installation teams translates to knowledge which can help one enter the rapidly growing solar industry.

No experience needed. We provide all tools and safety gear. Installs are during the week and typically span two days, approximately 8:00am-3:00pm. For volunteers wanting to deepen skills and teach others, we offer a Team Leader Program as well as a Construction Internship- be sure to get more information at the orientation.

Interested? Volunteers must attend an orientation before joining our installs. Please visit our website, set up a volunteer profile, attend an orientation and join us in the field. Orientations occur each month and online. Walk-ins are always welcome.

We look forward to working together, thank you!

Mission Statement

GRID Alternatives' mission is to empower communities in need by providing renewable energy and energy efficiency services, equipment and training. We believe making energy choices that are good for the environment can go hand-in-hand with improving the lives of those living in low-income communities. GRID Alternatives collaborates with communities and local organizations to identify specific needs and to develop renewable energy solutions that are environmentally, socially and economically sustainable. GRID Alternatives' core program is the Solar Affordable Housing Program where we train and lead community volunteers and job trainees from all walks of life to install solar electric systems with low-income homeowners. Our mission also includes initiatives to improve representation of under-represented individuals of diverse backgrounds in the solar industry.

Description

GRID Alternatives is a non-profit organization that brings the benefits of solar technology to low-income communities. Using a barn-raising model, GRID Alternatives leads teams of volunteers and job trainees to install solar power on qualifying homes, providing needed savings for families struggling to make ends meet while preparing workers for jobs in the fast-growing solar industry.

The North Valley regional office was established in Chico, California in 2011 and serves a 20-county region in the North State. Since opening its doors in 2011, the North Valley office has completed more than 84 solar installations in the region, saving local families over $3 million over the systems’ lifetimes and preventing nearly 10,000 tons of greenhouse gas emissions. Statewide, GRID Alternatives has installed more than 6.0 MW of solar power for over 2,200 households across California. For more information, visit www.gridalternatives.org/my-community-north-valley
