BKR Literacy and Math Project

This position is for the Bessie K. Russell Branch Library

Position Title: Volunteer Literacy and Math Tutor

Objective of Position: To tutor and lead small group of students with classroom activities related to the subjects of reading and math.

Position Activities:
* Facilitate lesson plans to students including, but not limited to: reading comprehension, phonics, time, shapes, writing, fractions, and STEAM related topics (science, technology, engineering, art, and math)
* Provides assistance to students individually and in small groups

Time and Commitment:
* 2.5 -3.0 hours/shift, at least 1 shift/week
* 2-month commitment

About the project:
The Bessie K. Russell Branch Library Literacy and Math Project is designed to prepare, develop, and keep students engaged during the summer months.
Math and Reading is the primary focus of this program. Tutors will help improve and increase your child’s understanding of numbers and math functions, vocabulary, comprehension skills. All the while, encouraging children to read for pleasure and develop a love for math.

Project’s Curriculum:
PRE-K and Kindergarten will use the curriculum created by PBS Kids using the Super Why Reading Camp. We will also be incorporating a story time with group/team activities.
1st through 3rd grades’ curriculum is based on featured lesson plans through education.com The subjects covered will include reading, math, writing, and science.


Qualifications:

* Teaching and/or tutoring experience
* Experience working with elementary age learners
* A good listener, patient, and supportive
* Consistent attendance, reliable, and able to carry out duties independently
* Complete an informal 2-hour training and a 1-hour in-service training
