ORGANIZATION: Catholic Charities Atlanta

Catholic Charities Atlanta (CCA), a non-profit and one of the largest human service providers in northern Georgia, serves the most vulnerable regardless of their religious, social or economic background. We challenge poverty, counsel immigrants, and care for our clients by supporting the dignity and independence of all we serve. We support, educate, and create opportunities to ensure the well-being of all and engage community leaders in the betterment of those in need. CCA is a seven days a week, year-round operation and we could not exist without the support of our volunteers. There are many ways for volunteers and interns to serve, they provide hands-on caring by participating in critical onsite services, and can rotate through several areas during the day. Among the services that CCA provides, the CCA office of Refugee Resettlement Services helps refugee families from all over the world to rebuild their lives here in the Atlanta area. Resettlement services include finding and furnishing a home for the new arrivals, enrolling children in school, helping adults find employment, and so much more. Within their first six months, most refugees have become completely self-sufficient. To help with this process, we are looking for new volunteers to become Family Friends. Family Friends are volunteers who provide friendly encouragement to a family of refugees as they become familiar with life in the U.S. They support newly-arrived refugees by helping them learn and adapt to American culture and become familiar with the local community. They will also help refugees with basic life skills such as managing household affairs, going through their mail, and practicing English and language skills, as well as other related activities according to need and interest. Family friends must commit to a minimum of 2 hours per week for 4 months and will meet with refugees based on their individual schedules. New volunteers are invited to attend a quick and easy orientation session that will introduce them to Catholic Charities’ volunteer opportunities. Those interested in becoming a Family Friend are asked to please attend this orientation as well, but feel free to contact Anne Sodipo to discuss any questions you may have.
