RYP Summer Program 2015

Refugee youth possess limitless talents bounded by unique challenges. Approximately 400 new refugee students enter the Dallas Independent School District each year, however, the high school graduation rate for these students is less than 35% making the drop-out rate for them the highest among immigrant populations enrolled in the district. Refugee Services of Texas’ newly developed Refugee Youth Program (RYP) aims not only to help boost these numbers, but to empower refugee youth in all aspects of life through guidance and mentorship. The Refugee Youth Program's (RYP) Summer Program helps our kids stay engaged and challenged through educational, hands-on workshops and occasional field trips. It is also very helpful for those youth who are resettled in the summer in advance of their first year of school in the U.S. ___________________________________
We are looking for
friendly faces to attend between 1 and 3 curriculum days per week (Monday-Wednesday) to enrich interaction, understanding, and generally have a good time. Additionally, while many of our kids live in the Vickery Meadow area within walking distance from the Northwest Community Center, we would benefit greatly from transportation assistance for those who do not. We will have translators for our kids who require it and free lunches provided by one of our community partners. ___________________________________

What to expect:

We will meet from 10am until 1 pm (3 hours each day without driving time) Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays at the Northwest Community Center in Vickery Meadow.

Volunteering with the RST Youth Program requires an application and background check, an informal interview and, for those who wish to continue volunteering (or who wish to mentor) with the Youth Program after August, a volunteer orientation.
