Volunteer Doulas/Handholders will engage with patients before, during, and after their abortion procedures to provide emotional care and comfort. Volunteer Doulas must be willing to commit to submitting an application, interviewing for the volunteer position, undergoing an intensive training with the Choices Full Spectrum Doula Collective, undergoing an additional 1.5 hours of training through Planned Parenthood Greater Memphis Region, and submitting a background check. Volunteer Doulas are expected to volunteer with Planned Parenthood for a minimum of six months at least once per month. Qualifications include a strong commitment to compassionate healthcare, ease in engaging intimately with people of varying backgrounds, and strict adherence to our patient privacy policy.

Specific Duties:

• Ensure patients’ questions and concerns are addressed prior to the procedure.
• Comfort and talk with patients throughout the procedure.
• After the procedure, assist client in the recovery room.
• Assist the recovery room staff if necessary.

General Responsibilities:

• Maintain a positive, patient-centered attitude at all times.
• Maintain confidentiality of agency records, internal operations, and personnel matters at all times.
• Arrive on time for scheduled shifts or notify supervisors before scheduled shift with enough advance notice to schedule a replacement.
