What is HCAP?
The Health Center Advocacy Program seeks to establish a support base that accurately reflects the diversity of the varying groups of people who utilize Planned Parenthood services and to provide these supporters with a range of ways to get involved in our work. Often, this is the first point of entry for a patient to become a supporter and volunteer. By engaging patients in advocacy, we can educate and encourage them to be civically engaged in their community and protect access to health care.
What will HCAP volunteers be doing?
HCAP volunteers will gain crucial experience in the nonprofit and advocacy fields, as well as be a driving force in Planned Parenthood’s effort to educate health center visitors. HCAP volunteers will be working inside our health center lobby and waiting room to educate patients and engage them in advocacy. Specifically, the Health Center Advocate will collect Planned Parenthood supporter cards and ask patients to share their stories. HCAP volunteers will also participate in neighborhood canvassing to educate the Memphis community about Planned Parenthood services. Volunteers should have a desire to educate and mobilize individuals around health issues through community engagement, should be comfortable speaking to strangers on behalf of Planned Parenthood, should be comfortable working with people of varying backgrounds, and should strictly adhere to our patient privacy policy.
Commitment
HCAP Volunteers must be willing to commit to undergoing 2.5 hours of training with Planned Parenthood Greater Memphis Region and volunteering as an HCAP volunteer at least three times per month. Must be willing to consent to a background check.
