VITAS Healthcare is currently looking for volunteers to make home-sewn memory bears to help comfort family members after the death of a VITAS patient. The bears are sewn from select items of the patient's clothing: a favorite button down shirt, pair of pants, t-shirt, pullover top, sweatshirt, dress, etc. A Memory Bear may recall the closeness of a loved one, bring a smile to someone in distress. The bears can also offer a sense of security to a child who feels alone after the loss of a grandparent, parent or sibling. The fabric is provided by the family; the pattern, support and stuffing are provided by VITAS and the creativity is provided by the Memory Bear Volunteer. Experienced sewers and seamstresses are preferred.
Memory bears are a project that can be done in your own home and any time you are able to contribute is greatly appreciated. This is a great project for church groups and organizations who would like to make a difference. For more information, please contact Emily Jokerst at (314) 682-3434 or at Emily.Jokerst@Vitas.com.
