We are looking for volunteers who can call members to check in and to have a brief "good morning" or "good evening"chat. You will be paired with one member to start.
The Tempe Neighbors volunteers who make Friendly Phone Calls provide a powerful means of reassurance and social connection.
Many of our members requesting phone calls are homebound, elderly and/or disabled. Just to know someone cares and is willing to check in on them will help them feel reassured and less isolated.
Friendly Phone Calls are typically arranged in advance and usually occur at the same time each week or twice a week. You can call from home at your convenience.
Ideally, the same volunteer should make the regular phone call to help establish an ongoing connection and a one-on-one relationship.
We require an orientation and online background check prior before participating in this program.
*Let the member lead the conversation unless s/he is shy and needs drawing out. Talk about news of the day to discover interests. Personal history can be a good place to begin conversation - where are they originally from, places they have resided, places they have traveled, their family and pets, their career prior to retirement and their hobbies and interests.
