AmeriCorps Financial Empowerment Associate (NDMVA)

BACKGROUND: The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. At work in over 40 countries and 22 U.S. cities to restore safety, dignity and hope, the IRC leads the way from harm to home. The IRC in Atlanta office was established in 1979 and has resettled over 25,000 refugees from nearly 55 countries into the Greater Atlanta area. As the largest refugee resettlement agency in Georgia, the IRC in Atlanta resettles an average of 800 refugees into Georgia annually and provides additional services and assistance to another 3,000 refugees and asylees.

SCOPE OF WORK: The AmeriCorps Financial Empowerment Associate is a one-year position responsible for providing financial education, coaching, and employment preparation services to assist new and recently arrived refugee clients to gain the financial knowledge and job readiness skills needed to achieve and maintain economic self-sufficiency. This position reports to the Manager of Economic Empowerment.

PLEASE NOTE : This position is a Notre Dame Mission Volunteer (NDMV) AmeriCorps position. AmeriCorps oversight will be conducted through NDMV of Atlanta, and the IRC will serve as a site placement. Upon interview and selection by the IRC, the candidate will need to complete the AmeriCorps application process through the NDMV site liaison. This position start date is September 1, 2016.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Financial Education Services

  • Work with clients one-on-one to complete a detailed, individualized financial assessment
  • Work with clients to develop household budgets and provide strategies for effective budget management
  • Provide one-on-one financial coaching and counseling to clients, individualized and tailored based on client’s needs
  • Deliver group classes and workshops on financial literacy topics such as banking, budgeting, credit building, managing debit, and taxes
  • Tailor workshop materials and curriculum as needed to meet the needs of clients
  • Connect clients to other services offered by the IRC, such as employment placement, career development, and case management
  • Identify and develop relationships with local financial institutions and community organizations that can provide products and services that meet clients’ needs

Employment Preparation Services

  • Provide pre-employment and job readiness training one-on-one and in group settings, providing clients with the basic skills to enhance their employability
  • Work directly with clients to conduct employability intakes and assessments, develop employment plans, conduct practice interviews, create resumes, and lead career counseling sessions that convey key messages about the importance of employment in becoming self-sufficient

Outcome Tracking and Service Documentation

  • Maintain files and database records to track client progress through all economic empowerment services. Ensure timely and accurate compliance with all reporting requirements.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Undergraduate degree required
  • Experience with the US job search process and the ability to effectively coach clients through the nuanced process of securing employment.
  • Strong understanding of personal finances and ability to effectively coach clients
  • Excellent communication skills, with fluency in written and spoken English. Bilingual ability in one of the predominant languages of the local client base is desired.
  • Proven success achieving goals and working effectively with all levels of staff in a multicultural environment.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Valid driver’s license, reliable vehicle with current insurance, and the ability to travel regularly throughout the service delivery area.
  • Must be a US citizen or legal permanent resident and authorized to work in the U.S.
  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must commit to one full year of service.
