AmeriCorps Health and Wellness Associate (NDMVA)

BACKGROUND: The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. At work in over 40 countries and 26 U.S. cities to restore safety, dignity and hope, the IRC leads the way from harm to home. The IRC in Atlanta office was established in 1979 and has resettled over 25,000 refugees from nearly 55 countries into the Greater Atlanta area. As the largest refugee resettlement agency in Georgia, the IRC in Atlanta resettles an average of 800 refugees into Georgia annually and provides additional services and assistance to another 3,000 refugees and asylees.

SCOPE: The IRC Atlanta’s Health and Wellness department provides access to comprehensive health services and education programming to refugees in the metro Atlanta area. This position will focus on providing access to mental health screening and health education to women clients. This is a 37.5 hour per week position.

PLEASE NOTE : This position is a Notre Dame Mission Volunteer (NDMV) AmeriCorps position. AmeriCorps oversight will be conducted through NDMV of Atlanta, and the IRC will serve as a site placement. Upon interview and selection by the IRC, the candidate will need to complete the AmeriCorps application process through the NDMV site liaison. This position start date is September 1, 2016.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop, implement and evaluate health education classes.
  • Develop low literacy, culturally appropriate health materials.
  • Coordinate Health and Wellness program activities with other IRC programs.
  • Screen and refer clients for emotional distress; gender-based violence; and reproductive health needs.
  • Document client screening, referral and follow up results in excel tracking data base.
  • Maintain open and effective communication with Health and Wellness team staff.
  • Actively participate in regularly scheduled staff meetings.
  • Other duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Fluent spoken and written English
  • Previous health education development and teaching experience a plus
  • Undergraduate degree preferred
  • Background in public health or health education a plus
  • Ability to take initiative and work independently
  • Comfortable working in a cross-cultural environment; international experience a plus
  • Enthusiasm, positive attitude
