By fostering Seattle’s most vulnerable cats, you support the shelter’s mission to help find permanent homes for abandoned, orphaned, or neglected companion animals. It’s a fun project, and a life-saving one at that!

The goal is find wonderful adoptive homes for cats. These animals benefit from a level of care and enrichment only available in a home environment. Foster families feed, exercise, socialize, train, rehabilitate as needed, and market their animals for adoption.

Foster parents with the following skills and experience are particularly needed:

• Ability to socialize shy cats
• Ability to provide enrichment and exercise cats
• Ability to give medications to cats
• Photography
• Biography writing
• Bottle baby kitten care (experienced volunteers only)

You will receive specialized training, and the support of a dedicated and knowledgeable team. All medical care is covered by the shelter’s Help the Animals Fund. Fostering terms can be short, such as providing vacation coverage to other foster families, or long term, such as training an animal towards good social skills, or rehabilitating an animal post-surgery. Foster training sessions are held monthly at the Seattle Animal Shelter.

Foster parents need ease of transportation to and from the shelter for animal pick up, in-shelter veterinary visits, meeting potential adopters, etc.

Please note currently we are not recruiting foster parents who are only interested in fostering kittents - our kitten-experienced and trained foster team is currently full.

Please note that our foster program accepts applicants who live within City of Seattle limits or a couple miles from it. We occasionally make exceptions for highly qualified candidates. such as veterinarians, behaviorists, trainers, etc.
