Job Description and Expectations

Purpose: To advise, govern, oversee policy and direction, and assist with the leadership and general promotion of Pea Pod Nutrition and Lactation Support so as to support the organization’s mission and needs.

Mission statement: The mission of Pea Pod Nutrition and Lactation Support is to empower parents through evidence-based nutrition and lactation education, counseling and support to help them nourish their child(ren) in the most optimal way from conception through early childhood.

*Major responsibilities:

  • Organizational leadership and advisement
  • Organization of the board of directors, officers, and committees
  • Formulation and oversight of policies and procedures
  • Financial management, including adoption and oversight of the annual budget
  • Oversight of program planning and evaluation
  • Personnel evaluation and staff development
  • Review of organizational and programmatic reports
  • Promotion of the organization
  • Fundraising and outreach

*Members of the board share these responsibilities while acting in the interest of Pea Pod Nutrition and Lactation Support. Each member is expected to make recommendations based on his or her experience and vantage point in the community.

Length of term: Two years, which may be renewed up to a maximum of five consecutive terms, pending approval of the board.

Meetings and time commitment:

  • The board has 4 standing quarterly meetings with special meetings throughout the year based on current need
  • Committees of the board meet an average of four times per year, pending their respective work agenda.
  • Board members are asked to attend no more than two special events or meetings per year, as they are determined.

Expectations of board members:

  • Attend and participate in meetings on a regular basis, and special events as able.
  • Participate on a standing committee of the board, and serve on ad-hoc committees as necessary.
  • Be alert to community concerns that can be addressed by Pea Pod Nutrition and Lactation Support’s mission, objectives, and programs.
  • Help communicate and promote Pea Pod Nutrition and Lactation Support’s mission and programs to the community.
  • Become familiar with Pea Pod Nutrition and Lactation Support finances, budget, and financial/resource needs.
  • Understand the policies and procedures of Pea Pod Nutrition and Lactation Support.
  • Financially support Pea Pod Nutrition and Lactation Support in a manner commensurate with one’s ability.


Fundraising Committee Member Roles and Responsibilites:

  • Review all previous year fundraising activity including Annual Appeal and make recommendations for improvements for new fiscal year.
  • Conduct a fundraising SWOT analysis and revise and update the previous fund development plan based on findings.
  • Hold staff accountable for implementing the strategies of the fund development plan within stated timeframes; measure progress toward goals monthly; troubleshoot with staff as necessary.
  • Maintain shared fundraising calendar.
  • Analyze relationships with current and prospective major donors and funders, and develop individualized strategies to cultivate or strengthen those relationships.
  • Analyze relationships with current and prospective corporate sponsors, devise sponsorship packages, and work with staff and Board to develop relationships.
  • Work with Finance Committee to determine annual development budget.
  • Work with staff and outside consultants as required to plan and execute fundraising and events.
  • Along with Executive Director, meet with current and prospective major donors and funders (foundations and corporations).
  • Tap respective networks for potential donors of money, time and in-kind support.
  • Report back to the full Board during board meetings.
  • Meet bi-monthly and as needed.
  • Determine Board fundraising expectations and goals; provide guidance for Board members on meeting fundraising goals; track progress toward fundraising goals both for individual Board members and for the Board as a whole.

Description

Pea Pod Nutrition and Lactation Support, Inc. is dedicated to the nutritional health of women and children. We specialize in maternal nutrition with a focus on pre-natal, post-natal and lactation support as well as all aspects of pediatric nutrition. We offer an array of services to women and children including nutritional counseling, breastfeeding education, office based and in-home lactation consultations, group breastfeeding classes, group nutrition classes, cooking classes and gardening classes.

At Pea Pod we believe that supporting and educating mothers how to optimally nourish themselves and their children is the cornerstone to a healthy community. Our commitment to this belief is the foundation of the non-profit arm of our organization, the Pea Pod Assistance Program (PPAP), which provides low-cost and/or free nutrition and lactation education and support to low-income women and children.
