The Kings Against Violence Initiative "Young Ones" (KAVI YO) program will serve 20 youth in grades 6-8 by providing an after-school empowerment and development program. Weekly workshops will seek to prevent and intervene in violence by supporting young people as they develop self-control, identity, healthy relationships, and an expanded awareness of their role in their own communities. KAVI YO will also provide academic support, mental health assessment and referral, and linkage to summer jobs and ongoing youth empowerment activities.
KAVI is seeking two adult (18+) mentors to attend programming 2x/week on Mondays and Thursdays from 3:15-5pm. Mentors will assist program participants with homework during the first hour of programming and provide support to the two workshop facilitators during the second hour of programming. Mentors will not be responsible for facilitating workshop content, but will be invited to do so if a particular topic appeals to him/her. In all activities, mentors act as an additional positive adult role model by showing care and concern for youth participants and sharing his/her adult perspective on workshop topics. Mentors may be asked to accompany the group on trips or attend workshops during school vacation times.
The ideal mentor has some background or experience working with teens in a youth development or educational context. KAVI YO works from a youth empowerment perspective; we seek to create a space and provide information for young people to make safe, healthy choices on their own. Our belief that they have an innate capacity to do so is at the heart of our work.
Mentoring for KAVI is a great way to build your resume, gain skills in group facilitation and leadership, and gain access to professionals in the social services, non-profit leadership, and medical fields. Please refer to our Volunteer Match site to formally apply; however, please do not hesitate to contact the Community Programs Coordinator with any questions.More opportunities with Kings Against Violence Initiative (KAVI)

Mission Statement
Kings Against Violence Initiative (KAVI) is a hospital, school, and community-based organization that provides young people with productive and safe alternatives to engaging in interpersonal violence by empowering youth and cultivating their untapped potential.
Description
School Program:
Prevention and intervention of youth violence are essential to the core goals of the KAVI program. The programs consist of weekly workshops and activities that focus on: Identity Exploration, Self-Governing, Conflict Resolution and Communication, Peer Mediation, Goal Development and Critical Thinking, Life Skills Development, and Fitness. Our staff includes outreach workers that are familiar with the inherent challenges of life in central Brooklyn. KAVI currently has programs at the High School for Human Rights, the High School for Public Service, and Eagle Academy.
Hospital:
Hospital responders at Kings County Hospital work directly with victims of invasive wounds. These helpful responders work with victims as mediators, resource providers and general support systems. We also provide support groups for violently-injured teens.
Community:
KAVI provides the KAVI Young Ones (YO) afterschool program for students in grades 6-8. KAVI YO addresses many of the topics that our high school programs address. KAVI YO meets after school twice a week at the hospital.
Volunteer testimonials:
"I volunteer with KAVI because I wanted to help young women of color reach their full potential and help them understand that they can be agents of change in their own lives and communities." - KAVI Queens 2015-2016 Workshop Facilitator
