CANCELLED - SOUTH BAY FISHING IN THE CITY

Saturday, October 1st, 2016

7:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

Lake Cunningham

South Bay Fishing in the City teaches children ages five to 15 how to fish on their own. Kids gain an appreciation for the outdoors and an awareness of basic environmental principles. After the clinic, they’ll have the skills needed to go out and fish at their local lakes, ponds and streams.

Volunteers assist our Fishing in the City core volunteers with our fishing clinic to instructing participants on the basics of fishing, including safety and ethics, knot tying, casting and rigging. Once they've received instruction from volunteer staff, kids are loaned a rod, provided with bait and tackle, and then are able to try their luck at fishing until noon. Volunteers also escort groups of children to the shoreline to encourage and assist them as they fish.

Volunteers will meet at 7:00 a.m. at Lakeview group site on the north side of Lake Cunningham, near Tully and White Rd. in San Jose, park in lot A. Pre-registration is required. Please dress in layers, and bring sunscreen and water. All registered volunteers will receive a confirmation notice prior to the event, including a map and final details.

Fishing skills are not required: our core volunteers are experts and they need your help to assist with managing small groups and doing demonstrations at the teaching stations. You simply need to be comfortable with children and with the outdoors. And if you’d like to learn how to fish yourself, you'll learn by watching!

For more information or to register for this event, please contact the Volunteer Program at volunteer@prk.sccgov.org or call (408) 918-4930 .
