ORGANIZATION: Capitol Hill Supportive Services Program

Currently I serve as the Human Rights Chairperson of Capitol Hill Supportive Services Program (CHSSP). We are a small, DC nonprofit organization that provides day and residential supports to adults with intellectual and other developmental disabilities. One of our charges as a service provider is to ensure that people’s rights are protected, and that any restrictions of rights for clinical treatments/purposes are reviewed per individual supported, and approved by a community-based committee. The committee must meet certain membership standards. These include ensuring that clinicians, attorneys, family members, and others who are not paid to support our service population and therefore are disinterested parties, review each restrictive measure to ensure that it is reasonable, appropriate, and the least restrictive/intrusive treatment process possible to achieve the outcome desired by the person. The committee must include an attorney, per directive of our oversight agency, the DC Department on Disability Services.

CHSSP is reaching out to invite you to become the attorney on our committee, which is formally called the Human Rights Committee. We are able to pay a small stipend to cover the expense of your attendance via email, telephone or in person; and by "small" we mean $100 per meeting. The meeting normally requires that you have reviewed the restrictive clinical treatment documents prior to the meeting and can give your input efficiently during the meeting (whether by email, phone or in person).

If you decide you can serve, we also must provide you with a copy of the city policy on Human Rights for persons served within the Department on Disability Services’ network.

We understand that you are a very busy professional, and we would appreciate very much if you can find the time to assist us in this matter. If you are unable to do so, is there someone you could recommend for the role?

Thank you for taking the time to read through and consider our request. Please let me know your decision and/or recommendation.
