With great flowers comes great responsibility. The Deer Brigade is responsible for the important task of protecting the young trees, shrubs, and flowers from hungry deer who find access onto Cylburn’s grounds. Once the number of deer becomes too burdensome, the Deer Brigade comes in to perform Deer Drives - herders walk through the woods to herd deer toward a designated location, then blockers are spread out along the edge of the woods to block deer from going the wrong way. Training will be provided.
Deer drives occur on an 'as needed’ basis. Volunteers will have at least one week notice before drives occur.

Mission Statement
The mission of the Association is "to protect Cylburn as a place of open space, beauty, and quiet, and to ensure the preservation, enhancement and interpretation of Cylburn Arboretum's gardens, woodlands, historic buildings, and collections as educational, environmental, and recreational assets for the benefit of the City and the general public working in joint effort with the Baltimore City Department of Recreation and Parks.
Description
Cylburn Arboretum is 207 acres of open green space at the edge of the city of Baltimore. It is open year round to the public, free of charge. In addition to open space, there are display gardens, plant collections, specimen trees, and 3.5 miles of woodland trails. At the center of the grounds is the original mansion house of the former Tyson estate - built in 1863 - which now houses the offices of the Cylburn Arboretum Association and the Horticultural Division of the Baltimore City Department of Recreation and Parks. The mansion house first floor rooms are available as rental facilities for meetings and social events- including those programs hosted by the Arboretum. In addition, the grounds now offer the Vollmer Center - a green building opened in May 2010 that houses a welcome center, office space for other Cylburn partners, educational displays, and meeting/event space . A Nature Museum, housed in the original carriage house, offers a unique setting for an outstanding collection of native Maryland birds and their habitat materials, butterflies, fossils, sea shells, skulls, rocks, and other artifacts.
