ORGANIZATION: NEW YORK CITY URBAN DEBATE LEAGUE INC

Thank you for your interest! We anticipate nearly 200 middle school debaters will attend the upcoming NYCUDL Middle School State Championship tournament and we need you to make this event possible! Judges provide the crucial information debaters need to continue to grow and become more skilled debaters. Without your help hundreds of students will not get the opportunity to debate. Judging is a great way to give back to the community not only with your time but your advice. No debate experience is required - we provide judge training at our tournaments as well as throughout the year. All we ask is that you bring a passion for supporting our youth!

The State Championship is a two day tournament but volunteers should feel comfortable signing up for just Saturday or Sunday. The tournament will feature different formats including public forum and parliamentary debate. Read on for topic descriptions and please let us know of any preferences.

Public Forum Debate

We will use the April 2016 Resolution - Resolved: To alleviate income inequality in the United States, increased spending on public infrastructure should be prioritized over increased spending on means-tested welfare programs.

Parliamentary Debate

Preliminary Round Motions (5 rounds - we will repeat two of the topics):
● This House would increase funding for space exploration.
● This House would let 100,000 Syrian refugees into the U.S.

About NEW YORK CITY URBAN DEBATE LEAGUE INC

Location:

25 BROADWAY 12TH FLOOR, NEW YORK, NY 10004, US

Mission Statement

We aim to provide the highest-quality debate opportunities that develop young adults into informed, engaged and courageous citizens. Every school and every student should have access to the best debate education opportunities.

Description

In 2011, there were less than ten schools in New York City with debate teams. We were founded to change this statistic. Today, over 2000 students and 140 schools participate in monthly debates. Every day we support debate practices. Every week we offer Saturday workshops. Every weekend our debaters travel to local, regional, and national tournaments. Every month we host public debate nights. Every summer we host debate camps from the first day of summer to the last day of summer.

Over 90% of our high school seniors graduate and are accepted to college each year. Many of our graduates also receive full or partial scholarships to the college of their choice because of their participation in debate.

We were honored by the White House as one of the nation’s top after school programs.
