About SPANISH COALITION FOR HOUSING

Location:

1922 N PULASKI RD, CHICAGO, IL 60639, US

Mission Statement

SCH’s mission is to provide comprehensive counseling, education and housing resources necessary for Latinos and other low-to-moderate income families in the Chicagoland area, develop competence and responsibility in meeting their financial and housing needs, and advocate for and proactively promote additional resources for them.

Description

In 1966, Spanish Coalition for Housing began as a collaboration of groups from Chicago’s north and south sides that sought to address issues facing the Latino community. During this early stage SCH became a leader in the fight against housing discrimination, redlining, and disinvestment from financial institutions. SCH organized regular meetings with the Federal Housing Administration (FHA), the Dept. of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), and the City of Chicago to advocate on behalf of the Latino community. In 1973, SCH became the very first organization to be certified as a Housing Counseling Agency by the Department of Housing and Urban Development. SCH continued advancing new ideas in financial education and housing but found meteoric growth when in 1992 SCH was hand-selected by HUD to pilot a new housing counseling program and in 1996 when SCH became the Chicago Housing Authority’s Latino offices administrator.

The most recent financial crisis has further pushed SCH to the forefront of housing in Chicago. Since 2007 we have seen a 996% increase in clients seeking foreclosure prevention. We also expanded our financial education, renter and landlord education programs to promote financial stability and prevent foreclosure, before it starts.

We have three locations to serve the North and South sides of Chicago and now see over 10,000 clients per year. We continue to deliver quality programs and compassionate service to all residents in need. We are your ally when you need help.
