Pen Parentis Literary Salons
Our salons are free and open to the public.

These are the dates: March 13, Apr 10, and May 8.

Time commitment is 6:30pm - 9:30pm. Please only apply if you can firmly commit to at least one of these dates.

All Salons will be at Andaz Wall Street (75 Wall in Lower Manhattan, any train to Wall Street or Fulton Center and walk east), these evening Salons are open to the public 21+. These events are upscale and are listed in the New Yorker and TimeOut NY.

MORE INFO: Our monthly salons feature authors doing readings from their newest works, free wine, and discussion of life-work balance. We need lovely, people-savvy volunteers to help greet the authors and audience as they come in--make them feel at home, check reservations, show them around, and then remain available to answer questions about the facilities and the order of events, and to encourage people to sign the mailing list.

You will meet dozens of fascinating established authors as well as lots of industry notables and downtown personalities.

You: upbeat, friendly, quick thinking, good at lists. This is a business-casual event.

We are a nonprofit and our mission is to keep writers on creative track after they start a family - these Salons are intended to present authors who are parents in a new light. Our writers are huge names, straight from the NYTimes and New Yorker.

We prefer that the same volunteers come every time, but we are open to having various volunteers for various dates - please send us your availability to see if we have filled the spot! Sign up for as many or as few dates as you can FIRMLY commit to!

*** if you happen to also be great at Twitter, please let us know in your note.

About PEN PARENTIS

Location:

176 BROADWAY, NEW YORK CITY, NY 10038, US

Mission Statement

Pen Parentis helps writers stay on creative track after having kids. We are a federally recognized 501c3 nonprofit literary organization that runs a series of celebrated literary salons, an annual Writing Fellowship for New Parents, and many online and in-person networking and career-supportive events for writers who are also parents. We are honored to partner with many established businesses and nonprofits. Recent recipients of a NYSCA two-year grant, we have been frequently funded by New York City's Department of Cultural Affairs and Poets & Writers Magazine. 2018-2022 Platinum Status.

Description

Because the arts world stigmatizes creatives who have opted to start a family, Pen Parentis provides critical resources to authors who balance a creative career with parenting, inspiring them to stay on creative track. Founder M. M. De Voe serves as executive director. Our Salons Curator, Christina Chiu, won the 2015 Wai Look Award celebrating diversity. We are an all-volunteer organization. We work for our passion for literature.

Our Literary Salons feature exemplary creative work by writing parents and break stereotypes associated with parenthood. This long running program is featured in the New Yorker, New York Times and TimeOut NY, and has moved online for the duration of the pandemic. We also offer an annual $1000 Writing Fellowship for New Parents, and provide opportunity for writer-parents to build grassroots networking communities in our Cycle of Support.

We actively seek to be inclusive, and warmly welcome writing parents who are multiracial, multi-religious, parenting solo or through adoption, grandparents, teen moms, and LGBTQ. More details about us at penparentis.org
