Rochester Animal Services (RAS) is a municipal animal care and control agency located in the High Falls District of Rochester. With an annual intake of 4,000 animals, RAS seeks to improve the quality of life and safety for city residents and their animals and works to promote responsible pet ownership and the reduction of animal overpopulation through education, pet licensing, adoption, reuniting lost pets with their owners and providing a low-cost spay neuter clinic for city residents.

The Verona Street Animal Society, (VSAS) is dedicated to providing the resources necessary to enable Rochester Animal Services to more effectively serve the public's animal care and control, pet sterilization, and pet adoption interests and, in cooperation with the City of Rochester, to support the mission of Rochester Animal Services.

This is our largest fundraiser of the year. We need a lot of help to make this event a fun and successful time for everyone involved!

Volunteers must be 18 years or older to participate. Please do not sign up for a RAS or VSAS required spots as those require credentials.

Description

Rochester Animal Services became a unit of the Rochester Police Department in July 2000 when the Humane Society at Lollypop Farm opted to discontinue the contractual agreement with the City, which had been in place for the previous 18-20 years. In February 2005, Jennifer Brown met with Chris Fitzgerald, Director of Animal Services, to find out what she could do to help the shelter and the animals. Fitzgerald explained the differences between the City's shelter and private not-for-profit shelters and the corresponding challenges and limitations therein. Following that initial meeting, Ms. Brown adopted her husky Nanuk from the shelter and became a volunteer, walking dogs and assisting with special events. Simultaneously, Ms. Brown began the process of forming a separate not-for-profit 501(c)3 group to provide support and resources to the shelter. Small informational meetings began in January 2006 to explain the group's purpose and to recruit members. The Verona Street Animal Society officially formed in May 2006. In September 2006, the VSAS appointed the board of directors and elected its first officers.
