The 24 Hour Helpline is one of our most critical programs. With your help, we can ensure that any survivor who needs help can find it, no matter what the time or day.

In-Office Helpline Volunteers:

You will respond to helpline calls and provide in- person support to survivors at the Downtown Support Center.

On-Call Volunteers:

You will be available by phone during evening, overnight, or weekend shifts to answer helpline calls, respond to law enforcement referrals, and provide in-person support during medical exams.

Qualifications

  • Ability to respond with empathy to individuals in crisis
  • Active listening skills and ability to tailor friendly communication skills to meet client needs
  • Belief in the rights of all individuals to self-determination and empowerment
  • Comfortable working with people of varying socioeconomic backgrounds, sexual orientations, and racial diversity
  • One year commitment of four helpline or on-call shifts per month
  • Successfully complete an in-person interview and criminal background check
  • Successfully complete the 55 hour Advocacy Counselor Training and maintain 32 ongoing training hours each year after

Description

Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Services of Whatcom County (DVSAS) offers a variety of services to those who are currently experiencing or have experienced domestic violence or sexual assault. Through advocacy counseling, support groups, legal assistance, and community trainings, DVSAS provides support, education, and healing to thousands of people each year.

Our services include:

24-Hour Helpline
The 24-hour helpline may be the easiest way to access services. You will immediately be put in contact with a trained advocate who is available to listen, answer questions, and give referrals.

Drop-In Advocacy Counseling
We have advocacy counselors available on a scheduled or drop-in basis, Monday through Friday, 9am-5pm. Upon arrival you will meet with an advocate who can assist you with your needs.

Support Groups
Confidential support groups for male and female survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. Groups are held at a variety of locations including at DVSAS, the Department of Social Health Services, and many Whatcom County schools.

Legal Assistance
Immediate support with Protection Orders, police reports and court proceedings.

Medical Support
Personal support through medical exams following an incident of rape, sexual assault, or domestic violence.

Community Education
Training, workshops and presentations for schools, businesses and organizations.
