2016 SCI 60th Anniversary Celebration

Sister Cities International was created at President Eisenhower’s 1956 White House summit on citizen diplomacy, where he envisioned a network that would be a champion for peace and prosperity by fostering bonds between people from different communities around the world. By forming these relationships, President Eisenhower reasoned that people from different cultures could understand, appreciate, and celebrate their differences while building partnerships that would lessen the chance of new conflicts. Since its inception, the Sister Cities International network has played a key role in renewing and strengthening important global relationships. This network unites tens of thousands of citizen diplomats and volunteers in 545 communities with over 2,100 partnerships in 145 countries on six continents.

Sister Cities International is marking a major milestone as we kick off our 60th anniversary year in 2016. The celebration will not only honor the 60 years of history behind SCI, but also its promising future of sustaining Eisenhower’s original vision of fostering world peace through global people-to-people relationships.

We will have many events surrounding this momentous occasion including our 60th Annual Conference, Youth Leadership Summit, Diplomatic Gala, various educational forums, and special hosted receptions. The 60th anniversary celebration will be held in Washington, D.C. July 13-16, 2016. The theme will be "Peace Through People."

We need the local community to assist with various activities to include:

  • Assistance with the Annual Conference registration and breakout sessions, as well as directing delegates to various off-site events.
  • Flag bearers in our Opening Ceremony & Parade of Flags the morning of Friday, July 14 from 10:00 -11:00 am. (Looking for individuals ages 10-18)
  • Chaperones for our Youth Leadership Summit (Looking for young professionals individuals ages 20 - 34. Chaperones must be willing to stay in GW dorms 7/13-7/16)

All volunteers will be asked to attend a training session on Tuesday, July 12 at the Mayflower Hotel (1127 Connecticut Ave, NW Washington, D.C. 20036), Cabinet Room, from 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm. Sister Cities International is a nonprofit citizen diplomacy network that creates and strengthens partnerships between U.S. and international communities. We strive to build global cooperation at the municipal level, promote cultural understanding and stimulate economic development.

Sister Cities International is a leader for local community development and volunteer action. We motivate and empower private citizens, municipal officials and business leaders to conduct long-term sister city programs. We believe that sister city programs involve two-way communication and should mutually benefit partnering communities.

Our goals are to:

* Develop municipal partnerships between U.S. cities, counties, and states and similar jurisdictions in other nations.
* Provide opportunities for city officials and citizens to experience and explore other cultures through long-term community partnerships.
* Create an atmosphere in which economic and community development can be implemented and strengthened.
* Stimulate environments through which communities will creatively learn, work, and solve problems together through reciprocal cultural, educational, municipal, business, professional and technical exchanges and projects.
