Testing and Counseling

Volunteers assist CTRS staff with the daily operation of the testing clinic, which may include performing administrative duties, administering the Rapid HIV Antibody Test and providing preventative counseling. Volunteers must complete an intensive training and shadowing program to prepare them for working with clients. Volunteers are trained on all positions, and if feasible, are utilized in the roles that are most aligned with their particular skill set. Opportunities to put your skills to work are offered at the agency and at outreach events throughout the Atlanta Metro area. The full Counseling & Testing training will be through the Georgia Department of Public Health or another approved organization. The Counseling & Testing training is a 3-day class offered periodically, is typically Monday-Friday between 9 am - 5 pm. Volunteers MUST BE APPROVED by both the CTRS staff and the volunteer manager in order to attend this training on behalf of AID Atlanta. Must satisfactorily complete a background check. AIDS 101 is mandatory and attendance is required before consideration to volunteer in Testing and Counseling.

Mission Statement

The mission of AID Atlanta is to reduce new HIV infections and improve the quality of life of its members and the community by breaking barriers and building community

Description

AID Atlanta, Inc., founded in 1982, began as a grassroots organization with a small group of volunteers who, in response to the national HIV/AIDS epidemic first reported in San Francisco, went into action educating gay men in the Atlanta area about prevention and assisting with accessing medical care. Continuing to fight the epidemic 40 years later, AID Atlanta, Inc. is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) public organization that provides HIV testing, counseling and prevention, and linkage services to high risk HIV negative and HIV Positive individuals living within the Metropolitan Statistical Area of Atlanta, Georgia. The mission of AID Atlanta is to reduce new HIV infections and improve the quality of life of its members and the community by breaking barriers and building community. This mission is accomplished through direct client services, a primary health care clinic and HIV prevention education. This mission is shown through HIV testing and prevention services including outreach to heavily burdened communities and is done in a manner that is meaningful and impactful to the communities being targeted. AID Atlanta is committed to providing any prevention tool to the target population that needs it most. The effort to reduce the risks will be enhanced by offering PrEP, nPEP, STI screenings. By striving to provide a community dialogue about PrEP and STI services, AID Atlanta will increase awareness and decrease misinformation and judgement, resulting in the target population becoming better informed of all prevention tools, including condoms, PrEP, and nPEP.
