Flash Mob Attack on Invasive Grass, Coastal Watershed Stewardship Adventure sy

Save to Favorites

ORGANIZATION: Habitat Works

In the rolling coastal hills above Gaviota State Beach, where Hwy 1 heads west along the Santa Ynez Mountains, we'll head east in 4WD along the ridge road toward Gaviota Peak. We'll be on the north side, where winter temps can easily reach into the mid 70s.

We'll be conducting a flash-mob attack on the local invasive veldt grass, shoveling and pitching the plants into hay stacks to self-compost down into available nutrients for the habitat.

We'll enjoy lunch at the local 'Paradise Cafe', with views over the beautiful Santa Barbara coastline and our ocean Pacific. At day's end, we'll head for our group camping site off Paradise Road, north of Santa Barbara, where we'll enjoy a toasty campfire, a splendid gourmet community feast and fall to sleep under a starry starry night.

Some seats will be available in other 4WD vehicles, especially if you sign up early. We can leave the 2WD cars safely behind a locked gate on the dirt road. Sign up below to get a gear list. Directions come out a few days before to registered participants.

Mission Statement

Habitat Works is a volunteer environmental stewardship organization, improving wildlife habitat in Southern California's forests, wildlife refuges, state parks and private preserves.

Description

Habitat Works hosts single-day habitat restoration projects, weekend campouts and backpacking trips in Southern California's precious National Forests, private preserves and State and National Parks. Volunteers learn about our own local ecology, native flora and fauna and the challenges they face, and have the hands-on opportunity to improve conditions in Southern California wildlife habitat. Spend time in nature while making a difference - caring for our natural environment. We look forward to meeting and working with you soon!
