ORGANIZATION: The Salvation Army of Sarasota County

Parent mentors meet with their mentee once per week for 30 minutes at the Center for Worship and Service (1701 S. Tuttle Avenue). The role of the parent mentor is to support parents in overcoming barriers in reaching their academic goals, to check in weekly to see how they are doing and to discuss their progress. Parent mentors are outside of the parent’s social network which provides a less threatening arena to discuss successes and obstacles without fear of judgment or social impact. Parent mentors are invited to attend Monday night dinner with their mentees and to meet with other mentors.

Time Commitment: ½ hour weekly and attend scheduled mentor meetings once every two weeks.

Main Goal: Relationship building, support with academic goals.

  • Emergency Financial Assistance - a preemptive step to stop crisis before families and individuals become homeless.
  • Pathway of Hope - helping families overcome barriers like unemployment, unstable housing and lack of education.
  • Life Recovery Programs - provides individualized, life-saving services to adult men and women who are homeless, addicted to drugs or alcohol, or are incarcerated.
  • Quality of Life - proactive housing-focused services, to include an emergency shelter for adults 18 and older.
  • Community Centers - youth programs, community fellowship groups, senior programs, summer camps, group worship meetings, and afterschool programs.
  • Food Pantries - in Venice and North Port
  • A Thrift Store - in Venice
