Mission Statement

United Cerebral Palsy of Greater Birmingham provides innovative services connecting people with disabilities to their communities and empowering individuals to live full and meaningful lives.

Description

People with disabilities have better lives because of United Cerebral Palsy of Greater Birmingham, which was founded in 1948 by individuals who cared about the quality of life for people with cerebral palsy. At that time, the Cerebral Palsy Center, or Spastic Aid of Alabama as it was known, served children of all ages in both day programs and residential services. In 1972, the center became known as the Simpson-May Center in honor of Dr. John Simpson, medical pioneer in the care of individuals with cerebral palsy, and Ms. Elizabeth May, first director of United Cerebral Palsy of Greater Birmingham.

Since that time, United Cerebral Palsy of Greater Birmingham has provided services and programs for children and adults with disabilities addressing physical and health needs, encouraging their educational development and offering opportunities for true integration into the community.

United Cerebral Palsy of Greater Birmingham is an affiliate of United Cerebral Palsy Associations, Inc., a national organization recognized for quality services. Accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF), a national, private, nonprofit organization that carries out the functions of quality control, United Cerebral Palsy of Greater Birmingham is a great steward of funds.
