First Graduate Mission:
Our mission is to help San Francisco students become the first in their families to graduate from college, well prepared to begin meaningful careers. We make a 10-12 year commitment to each student, beginning the summer after 6th grade through the completion of college.

Vision:
By supporting first-generation college students we hope to make a lasting impact on the lives of San Francisco families that will allow them to begin a college-going tradition.

We believe that in order to create lasting change in the educational success of students attending San Francisco public schools we need to focus on those students with the greatest need - those who come from households without a college-going tradition and who attend under-resourced schools that might be unable to provide them with the 1:1 coaching and resources they need to succeed in high school, graduate from college, and excel in their careers.

Importance
Our afterschool program is a space for our new FG students to build community and to collaborate with peers who are on the same path to become first-generation college students. As peer mentors not only will you provide the academic support that First Graduate middle school students need but you will also play a major role in keeping students engaged and on track towards college!

Peer Mentor Role

  • Provide individualized/group homework support and break down and review material/concepts that a student(s) are struggling with
  • Build meaningful relationships with First Graduate students that piques their curiosity about college and future careers
  • Support FG staff in creating an engaging and safe space for students to learn and explore their interest through enriching discussion topics about college and high school

Why Volunteer?

  • Hangout and support ambitious first-generation college students while gaining experience working in a classroom setting
  • Build your interpersonal skills and strengthen your group facilitation skills
  • Make a lasting impact on our student's academic journey by sharing your story and how you made it to high school or college!
  • Fulfill your volunteer hours and gain experience from professionals working in the college access field
  • Gain transferable skills that will allow you to stand out on your new job, internship, scholarship, or college application.

Time Commitment:
We are currently embedded at the following Middle Schools and they each have their own FG afterschool program.

Denman Middle School Mon & Wed 3:45-4:30 pm

Everett Middle School Mon-Thurs 3:30-4:30 pm

  • Peer Mentors have the flexibility of creating their own schedule
  • 1-2 hrs/week to the First Graduate afterschool program that best fits your schedule from February to May 2019. There will be no afterschool program on national holidays and Spring Break (March 25th-29th)
  • Peer mentors will be offered a training prior to their volunteer start date
We highly encourage you to volunteer if:
  • You are or will be a first-generation college student
  • Grew up in San Francisco and have attended a San Francisco High School
