Description

At the time of the grouind breaking in September 1965, Liliha Public Library was the 12th designated library on Oahu. Since then, this number has doubled to 24 libraries on this island whose population grew from 500,394 in 1960 to 953,207 in 2010.

The building was designed by Stephen Oyakawa, an architect who studied under Frank Lloyd Wright and features skylights, rounded corners and generous allotments of space througout the building.

The library opened in December 1966 with a capacity of 25,000 books. In 2012, the library's collection has grown to more than 90,000 items and an extensive Chinese languge collection that strives to meet the demands of its community.
