Education Justice Project Internship
ORGANIZATION: Education Justice Project
Please visit the new page to apply.
Do you think that education for incarcerated people is a matter of urgency and justice?
If so, think about applying to be an intern with the Education Justice Program (EJP), a unit of the College of Education at UIUC. EJP offers academic programs to men incarcerated at Danville Correctional Center. The core of these programs are upper-division, for-credit courses, taught at the prison by Illinois faculty and advanced graduate students. EJP also addresses issues related to re-entry and the collateral impacts of incarceration on families and communities through its outreach program FACE. You can learn more about our work at www.educationjustice.net.
The internship position, which is based in EJP’s Urbana campus office, is a great opportunity to get involved with the day-to-day workings of a model college-in-prison program. Interns work directly with and are supervised by EJP’s operations manager, Jamie Hines. We ask that interns work a minimum of 8 hours each week during our office hours, which are from 9 - 5pm, M-F. The responsibilities and tasks that interns might take on vary greatly, depending on the current needs of EJP and the interests of the intern. Some examples of past projects include setting up EJP’s archives, database work, re-organizing office spaces, preparing teaching presentations for EJP instructors, helping with special events, and doing mass mailings.
We are seeking someone who has a commitment to social justice, eagerness to help with EJP’s different programs, and is willing to work as part of team.
To apply please email a letter of interest and your CV to Jamie Hines

Mission Statement
The mission of the Education Justice Project is to build a model college-in-prison program that demonstrates the positive impacts of higher education upon incarcerated people, their families, the communities from which they come, the host institution, and society as a whole.
Description
EJP is a vibrant academic community of incarcerated students, educators, formerly incarcerated individuals, family members of the incarcerated, and others who are committed to more just and humane world, achieved through education and critical awareness. We believe that providing opportunities for quality postsecondary education within American prisons is an important step towards that vision. Accordingly, EJP offers educational programming at Danville Correctional Center through the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
An excellent, comprehensive prison education program must also work outside of the prison, providing continued support for its alumni. Because we recognize the multiple impacts of prison education upon incarcerated students’ families and communities, we also host programs to support their educational goals and their efforts to better navigate the challenges of having a loved one behind bars.
Finally, we are committed to public education around issues of incarceration and criminal justice. We conduct frequent events on the University of Illinois campus and the Urbana-Champaign community to increase awareness of these topics.
