ORGANIZATION: American Red Cross - Eastern New York Region

PLACEMENT PURPOSE
You will be an essential part of the American Red Cross of Eastern New York’s response and recovery team. This position is responsible for safely deploying, coordinating, coaching and supervising Eastern New York disaster workers to active disaster scenes throughout our twenty-four counties. The duty officer supports disaster responders in the field and ensures accountability and standardization for the entire region’s disaster response and recovery program. This is NOT an  on-scene  disaster response position, and can be done from the comfort of volunteers’ homes. Duty officers are not allowed to be on call for a local disaster action team at the same time they are on for a duty officer shift as they are responsible for their duty officer role across twenty four county regions. When larger disasters strike in Eastern New York’s region, the duty officer will help the local disaster team identify material and human resource gaps and communicate with the on call disaster supervisor as to what the gaps are and how to proceed in delivering Disaster Services to the affected community.

OPEN TIME DAYS

Minimum requirement to hold the duty officer position is twelve shifts per month, shifts are in Eastern Time Zone and are 6:00am until 6:00pm or 6:00pm until 6:00am.

Coverage is needed across our two states 24 hours, 7 days per week, 365 days a year. We are willing to work with your schedule as long as it fits the needs of the program and organization.

REQUIRED TRAINING
IMMEDIATELY:
  • Series of webinars to introduce tools used by duty officers on a routine basis (incident logs, neighborhood, Volunteer Connection, etc.)
  • Ongoing support from an assigned coach for two to three months, once initial training completed
  • Disaster Cycle Services: An Overview (Online EMBARC)
  • CAS 2.0: An Introduction (Online EMBARC)
  • CAS 2.0: Creating and Editing Cases (Online EMBARC)
  • CAS 2.0: Issuing Assistance (Online EMBARC)
WITHIN 6 MONTHS COMPLETE:
  • Mass Care: An Overview (Online EMBARC)
  • Shelter Fundamentals (Online EMBARC)
  • Disaster Assessment Fundamentals (Online EMBARC)
  • Casework and Recovery Planning Fundamentals (Online EMBARC)
  • Introduction to NSS Support (Online EMBARC)
  • Psychological First Aid (Highly Recommended When Available)
