ORGANIZATION: Grand Street Community Arts

  • 5 people are interested

Grand Street Community Arts is in a period of transformation, designing new program space in our building, and preparing to move our first new program- WCAA-back in to the renovated St. Anthony’s. We need help to conduct interviews with political figures and architecture and planning professionals, in the second phase of our "Stakeholder Inquiry."

Since December, we have been inquiring about the role that Grand Street Community Arts could play in the Capital Region to inform our design project. This next phase of our Inquiry will specifically reach out to local politicians, as well as to architecture and planning professionals (both local and national.)

We are seeking up to six volunteers to conduct telephone interviews. Each interview takes 20-30 minutes. Phase 2 of the Stakeholder Inquiry will take place from February 6 through March 14th. Phase 3 begins April 11th.

We are looking for committed volunteers as soon as possible so that we can make appointments for you. If you are interested, please book at least 2 normal business hours (9am - 6pm) per week that you will be available for making calls. (Let us know what hours you are available when you write to us.) We will then try to make appointments for you during your scheduled times.

You can conduct these calls from your own home, or from our Winter Swing Space on Morton Ave and Grand Street.

About Grand Street Community Arts

Location:

68 GRAND STREET, ALBANY, NY 12202, US

Mission Statement

To develop programs in the Capital Region that enlighten, empower, and engage our diverse community through the arts.

Description

Grand Street Community Arts was formed by concerned neighbors in the Mansion Neighborhood in 2003 as a way to bridge the cultural and economic divides within their neighborhood. The organization negotiated the purchase of the former St. Anthony’s Church, a long-vacant cornerstone of the community and a link with its immigrant past.

Constructed in 1907, St. Anthony’s Church not only filled the spiritual needs of parishioners, but also helped immigrants adjust to new lives in America by offering English classes and hosting performances, weddings and operas. Thus, St. Anthony’s has always been a center for the arts! In 1972, following the construction of the Empire State Plaza and the demolition of many homes in the South End, St. Anthony’s had lost its congregation and closed its doors. In 2003, Grand Street Community Arts purchased St. Anthony’s from the Roman Catholic Diocese of Albany, reopening its doors as a community center.

Since 2004, Grand Street Community Arts has offered a variety of creative programs, mostly focused on youth and access to public space. Our most successful program is YouthFX, a summer film-making academy launched in 2006. In 2016, YouthFX will become its own independent organization, offering year-round programming.
