Volunteers teach beginner English classes to adult Spanish speakers using a curriculum and lesson plans designed by the ESL coordinator. Typical class size ranges from 6-15 students. ESL teachers must be fluent in English and at least conversational, preferably fluent, in Spanish. Experience with ESL and/or adult education also preferred. Must be capable of teaching beginners in a patient, respectful, engaging, and effective way.
Classes are offered 10:00-11:30am MTWF and 7:00-8:30pm MTWTh. Teachers make a commitment to teach one or more of these time slots each week.

Our mission is one of living simply and communally with multicultural volunteers and guests, helping those most in need in East Oakland community, supporting an extended community of former guests in keeping itself organized and healthy, and advocating for the elimination of unjust structures locally and globally.
Description
The Oakland Catholic Worker has served as a transitional shelter and accompaniment program for Latin American refugees since 1986. In addition we serve our East Oakland neighbors in need by offering:
- English as a Second Language classes
- Hot food and weekly grocery distribution programs
- A gathering space for the religious and cultural needs of our extended community
- Advocacy promoting change with those marginalized by existing unjust political, social and economic structures
