The single greatest indicator of a child's academic success is the education of his or her parents. Yet many children have less of a chance to succeed, right from the start. That's because their parents can't read. Or write. In Essex County, 28-percent of all adults are considered functionally illiterate: They can't read to their children, help with homework, or write a note to, or read a note from, a child's teacher. At Literacy Volunteers of America, we teach basic literacy and English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) to adults. Why not share your gift of literacy? Help an adult learn to read and write. Attend an 18-hour training course to become a Literacy Volunteers of America tutor. Eighteen-hour training course takes place at the Montclair Public Library, 50 South Fullerton Avenue, Montclair, NJ 07042. Saturdays, 12:15-4:45 pm, January 28-February 25, 2017. Attendance at all sessions is strongly encouraged. After training, volunteers tutor once each week for two hours at a library in Essex or Passaic County. Other workshops listed at: http:www.lvaep.org/workshops.html

Please help us fight illiteracy. Call Russell at 973-566-6200, ext. 217, to register, or email rbenali@lvaep.org for registration information. More info: www.lvaep.org/
