ORGANIZATION: English Empowerment Center (formerly Literacy Council of Northern Virginia)

Tutoring
A volunteer tutor works one-on-one with his student.

The ESOL Tutoring Program is a one-on-one program for adults who need help with speaking and understanding English, as well as reading and writing. Students enrolled in this program represent over 73 countries from all regions of the world. They often have even lower-level English skills than those in classroom-based programs. Each student is taught by a volunteer tutor, who provides the student with specialized instruction, allowing the student to progress at his or her own pace and toward his or her individual goals. This program provides a wonderful volunteer opportunity for people who want to teach an adult student individually rather than in a group situation. Each tutor is matched with one student to whom the tutor provides individualized instruction, aimed at helping the student achieve his or her own learning goals. Volunteers in the tutoring programs have considerable flexibility, since each tutor/student pair sets its own schedule and meets once or twice a week at any public place, such as a library or community center, that is convenient to both members.

Location:

2855 Annandale Road, Falls Church, VA 22042, US

Mission Statement

The mission of the English Empowerment Center is to teach adults the basic skills of reading, writing, speaking, and understanding English so they can access employment and educational opportunities and more fully and equitably participate in the community.

Description

Established in 1962, the English Empowerment Center (formerly Literacy Council of Northern Virginia) has over 60 years of experience in English language instruction. Each year, EEC serves nearly 1,500 learners, many of whom are struggling to get by with minimal English-language skills. Using today’s best practices for adult learning and second language acquisition, we offer skills-based instruction in both in-person and virtual classrooms. EEC's classes are inexpensive and offered at various times, making them accessible to the largest number of adults with the most urgent language needs.
