Martin Luther King Day Volunteer Event at Cheasty Greenspace (Beacon Hill/South Seattle)
Organization |
Description
Join EarthCorps, Service for Peace, City Year, YMCA Earth Service Corps, Green Seattle Partnership, University of Washington and Seattle Parks Dept as we continue to restore this 43 acre south end greenspace. MLK Day of Service participants should expect to learn a brief history of Cheasty Greenspace and an overview of Seattle's urban forests. EarthCorps staff will discuss forest structure, native vs. non-native plant species, environmental restoration and safety. The service project includes the removal of English ivy a non-native invasive plant species that has invaded our urban forests. We will be developing "survival rings" around trees that have ivy growing up them. Other work may include planting native trees and shrubs, and restoration maintenance such as weeding, woodchip application and sheet mulching.
EarthCorps encourages the use of public transportation or carpooling to get to volunteer events.
