Mentors take the lead in supporting a young person through a one-to-one relationship, serve as a role model and friend, build a relationship by showing up when scheduled, strive for mutual respect, build self-esteem and motivation for the child, help set goals and work toward them, contribute to the academic success of the child.

Within the Mentoring Program, there are several types of volunteer activities:

Classroom Volunteer - Works with the teacher of the elementary or secondary children. Give individual help or read stories to one student or to a small group of students. Assist with special projects, clerical suties, such as record keeping or filing. Assist the teacher in supervising students on field trips, in the cafeteria, on the playground, during assemblies, or in the library. Making instructional materials, assisting in testing, other duties as assigned. Should enjoy working with children and be able to relate to them. Must be patient, cheerful and willing to follow directions and standards for student information confidentiality.

Tutor - Work with the classroom teacher (k-12) or specialist to reinforce student's learning through one-to-one or small group assistance in basic skills, help students master basic reading and math skills, reinforce coursework and study skills. Must relate well with students. Have an understanding of the subject matter being studies. Must understand the teaching-learning process, be dependable and maintain confidentiality.

Lunch Buddy - Help students (k-6) who would benefit from one-on-one attention, improve their self esteem, learning and communicating skills by matching them with adult volunteers. Attend training sessions. Spend at least one hour per week with assigned student for a minimum of eight weeks. Eat lunch and participate in activities such as reading and games. Honor school and program guidelines, participate in annual program evaluation. Must have the ability to spend one lunch hour a week with a child. A desire to spending time working and listening to a child. sensitivity to special needs of children, strong sense of confidentiality.

Must attend training, orientation, and on-going professional development.

Must pass a thorough background check.

The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) provides opportunities for people 55 and over to make a difference in their community through volunteer service. RSVP volunteers contribute anywhere from a few to over forty hours a week, serving through schools, day care centers, police departments, hospitals and other nonprofit and public organizations to help meet critical community needs. RSVP offers maximum flexibility and choice to its volunteers. RSVP matches the personal interests and skills of older Americans with opportunities to help solve community problems and offers supplemental insurance while on duty, and on-the-job training from the agency or organization where volunteers are placed.
