ST. THOMAS UNIVERSITY CENTER FOR COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

St. Thomas University (STU) is a small, Roman Catholic, Archdiocesan University located in Miami Gardens, FL. As part of its mission, St. Thomas works to provide a high-quality education to a largely underserved student population, while also engaging these students in the urgent social issues of their surrounding community. The Center for Community Engagement at St. Thomas University facilitates this work, locally, regionally and internationally.

Position Description: The St. Thomas University/Carol City Middle School Community Educational Partnership (STU/CCMS CEP) leverages university teaching and research resources into Carol City Middle School - a local, low-performing middle school in Miami Gardens, FL.

The STU/CCMS CEP VISTA member will work in the Center for Community Engagement to build infrastructure for the university’s multi-year, multi-level partnership with Carol City Middle School. The VISTA member will:

  • Develop and coordinate co-curricular mentoring programs at the middle school;
  • Recruit for, plan, and facilitate university-wide service days at the middle school (including Make a Difference Day, MLK Day of Service, etc.),
  • Support university faculty integrating their research and teaching into the middle school’s most critical needs.
  • Support Center for Community Engagement staff in local STU/CCMS CEP community engagement efforts as needed.


Skills and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree with experience in student leadership, education, community service/advocacy or community organizing.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including strong research skills and ability to speak in public.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills, attention to detail and ability to handle multiple projects
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Word and Excel, and basic computing skills
  • Ability to work independently and as a part of a team
  • Preferably some prior experience developing curriculum, and recruitment and management of volunteers.
