Silverado Hospice of Dallas/Fort Worth is pleased to offer our wonderful 11th Hour Vigil Program. No one should have to die alone, and with the Silverado Hospice 11th Hour Vigil Program, patients and families are able to receive the ongoing support and reassuring presence they may need during the time a patient is imminent. These special volunteers honor life in the midst of death by providing compassionate care to patients and their families who want a supportive presence as their loved one dies. The volunteer can offer a quiet, comforting presence at the bedside of dying patients, and give respite to the family. This gives grieving family members, who may not want to leave their loved one, permission to leave, take a nap, eat, cry, take a shower, etc. This volunteer can also help facilitate family conversations that honor the patient such as telling stories and sharing memories (when appropriate). It is important that potential volunteers understand not only the importance of this role, but also be comfortable providing services around death.

When an 11th Hour appropriate patient is identified, a volunteer would be called to meet those needs. Silverado Hospice serves patients wherever they call home, so our patients are located throughout the Metroplex, and opportunity locations can vary in and around DFW. It is also important that potential volunteers know there is sometimes no lead up as no one knows when death will occur, so this would be an "as needed" and "on call" position.

Schedule is flexible with training provided, however, 11th Hour Vigil Volunteers are asked to serve in a direct patient care role for a minimum of three (3) months prior to receiving additional training, and a vigil assignment. Volunteers need to be age 18 and over. Required background check, TB test and drug screen provided at no cost to the volunteer.

Mission Statement

Silverado Hospice's mission is to affirm the cycle of life by enhancing the quality of living for those at the end of life. The Silverado standard is to care compassionately for patients and their families and to empower those we serve to have quality of life options that afford them comfort and dignity.

Description

Silverado Hospice of Dallas/Fort Worth has a meaningful need for volunteers throughout the metroplex. Silverado patients and families experience L.I.F.E. (Love, Innovation, Family and Engagement) through our special hospice programs.

Hospice volunteers are ordinary people of all ages with extraordinary love and a common bond, concern for others. Our volunteers are an integral part of our Circle of Care team. Because we believe hospice is a philosophy and not a place, we meet the patients’ and families’ needs wherever they call home, including senior living communities, nursing facilities, hospitals, as well as in their homes. Our volunteers can serve in many different ways including:

  • Providing companionship and socialization to patient and family
  • Providing needed non-medical services such as letter writing, respite care and assisting with family needs
  • Providing office support for hospice programming by answering phones, emailing/mailing information, and other clerical work
  • Sitting vigil with patient and/or family during the passing of a patient
  • Providing support through bereavement
  • Providing support through our special programming services: Petals for Patients, Memory Catchers, Essential Oils, We Honor Veterans, Birthday Celebrations, Loving Lawns, Cards from Kids, and Comfort Food

You will undoubtedly find your volunteer experience with Silverado Hospice to be rewarding, educational, and life changing as you though the hearts and spirits of those you serve.
